Man Utd advised to make Frenkie de Jong transfer U-turn as two alternatives named

Manchester United should try and sign Declan Rice or Harry Kane as their marquee signing this summer rather than Frenkie de Jong.

That's according to Teddy Sheringham, who does not believe the Netherlands international will "set the world alight" if he does join United in the transfer window. De Jong has been linked with a move to Old Trafford for much of the summer and is Erik ten Hag's top midfield target following Christian Eriksen's arrival.

Tyrell Malacia became United's first swoop of the window as he joined in a £15m deal from Feyenoord before Eriksen made the switch on a free transfer. United then finalised their third signing on Sunday afternoon as Lisandro Martinez completed his £55m transfer from Ajax.

United are now expected to quicken up their pursuit of De Jong, although the midfielder has been named in Barcelona's squad for their pre-season tour of the USA. It is clear Ten Hag wants to bring in the 25-year-old but Sheringham has warned the Red Devils to not sign him and opt to go for Rice or Kane instead.

"He's a big name but I don't think he is one that is going to set the world alight at United and really come in and grab it by the scruff of the neck," Sheringham told the Daily Mail.

"If they'd have gone out and broken the bank for Declan Rice or Harry Kane - I know West Ham and Spurs fans are going to castigate me again for saying this sort of thing – but that is what you have got to do to make a statement.

"Ten Hag has got one hell of a job on his hands to change the vibe of the dressing room around but signings like that would change the whole ethos of where Man United are going. The signings that they've made are okay at best… and that is how fans will see it as well."

Rice has been one of the outstanding performers in the Premier League over the past couple of seasons, having been a regular in the West Ham side that has qualified for Europe in successive campaigns. He was also part of the England side that reached the final of Euro 2020 - playing in every game at the tournament.

Meanwhile, Kane scored 27 goals in all competitions last season - taking his Tottenham tally up to 248. The 29-year-old would be unlikely to switch north London for Manchester, however, given that Spurs are in the Champions League this season.
