Man United legend David Beckham sends Kevin de Bruyne message after matching record

David Beckham has shared a message with Kevin de Bruyne on social media after the Manchester City player matched one of his Premier League records against Southampton.

Having recorded 12 straight victories in their quest for a fourth title in five seasons, City were tested by the Saints and, ultimately, had to settle for a point on Saturday afternoon.

Kyle Walker-Peters had put the home side in front at St Mary's Stadium. City underlined their resolve, though, to hit back through Aymeric Laporte but had to share the spoils in a 1-1 draw.

Laporte might not be a familiar hero in that regard for Pep Guardiola and his star-studded group, but the supply-line for their equaliser was no such surprise.

Having returned to form either side of Christmas, de Bruyne provided the assist for Laporte as he moved into the top-ten in Premier League history.

Sitting level with Manchester United great Beckham on 80 assists, the Belgian sensation has now amassed that same number from 194 games — compared to the 262 it took the former England captain at Old Trafford.

Among the first to congratulate de Bruyne, the iconic Beckham also shared a joke with the City playmaker.

Uploading a graphic of them both on his Instagram story, Beckham said: "Not bad company to keep."

He added: "What a player... Kevin's not too bad either!" It was all very tongue-in-cheek from Beckham, who added a star and laughing face emoji.

Beckham and de Bruyne sit together in joint-ninth for assists in the Premier League. Ryan Giggs (162) remains top in that list, while Cesc Fabregas (111) and Wayne Rooney (103) complete the top-three.
