Man shot dead on street in Fitzroy, in Melbourne's north, in apparent 'targeted' attack

Homicide detectives are investigating the shooting, which they believe stemmed from an altercation near a parked car on Brunswick Street. (ABC News: Billy Draper)

A man has been shot and killed on Brunswick Street in the Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy in what police are calling a "targeted" attack.

Emergency services were called about 4:15pm and found a man with life-threatening injuries, who died at the scene.

Police believe the victim was involved in an altercation with a number of people at a vehicle parked on the street before being fatally shot.

Passers-by found the man and called emergency services.

Homicide detectives are investigating the circumstances of the shooting, but said it appeared to be a "targeted incident".

"It appears to be parties known to each other, I would really like to emphasise that. We're not looking at a random type of incident," Superintendent Paul O'Halloran said.

"We're throwing a large amount of resources to this incident as the public would expect."

Police said the man was at nearby commission flats on Brunswick Street, but could not confirm he was a resident.

Superintendent O'Halloran said the incident did not appear to be linked to any recent shootings in Melbourne, nor was the dead male connected to any gang activity.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
