Man praised for kind gesture to delivery driver after order ends up 1,000 miles away

After moving 1,000 miles from his home, a fast-food fan forgot to update his delivery address on an app.

So when Shahid Davis went to order a takeaway of a plant-based taco and burrito boat from the chain Chipotle for lunch last week (February 27), his food didn't end up where he'd hoped.

Instead of being delivered to his front door in Haggerston, Maryland, the order was 1,000 miles away in Des Moines, Iowa.

The 29-year-old realised the mix-up as he tracked his food and began to feel guilty that he'd wasted the delivery driver's time.

Unprepared to make the 15-hour journey to get his lunch, Shahid came up with a better plan.

The kind-hearted truck driver got in touch with the delivery driver and offered him his meal to enjoy instead.

The driver thanked him and poignantly revealed that his brother had died, but that it would have been his birthday that day and due to his kindness he was going to have lunch where he is laid to rest 'because of you'.

Shahid said: "On Sunday, I just wanted Chipotle for lunch, so I got on the app and I ordered [food].

"Once the app told me it was getting delivered I waited a couple of minutes.

"I was getting hungry and [looked on the app] to see how far he is, so I didn't miss him.

"But when I looked it showed me he was all the way in Iowa. I thought 'oh man, I forgot that the last time I used my Chipotle app was out there'."

He continued: "Seeing he was going to the wrong address, I messaged the support team on the Chipotle app to see what I could do about it.

"They said once the order is placed, there's nothing I can really do about it.

"So I told the guy 'hey, you can just have it for lunch, enjoy it', because it's just $20. It's not a big deal to me.

"He took time out of his day to take my order and go all the way to the delivery place, so I felt bad, because I felt like I wasted his time.

"Then I messaged him that lunch was on me, that's when he said 'thank you'."

His post went viral (Kennedy News and Media)

Shahid shared the text exchange on Facebook where it went viral, garnering more than 333,000 likes, shares and comments.

The post reads: "So I forgot to change my address on my chipotle app so I told the driver to keep it because the old address is back in Iowa.

"I was deada** mad at first but after reading this I'm happy this happened!"

The text exchange reads:

Delivery driver wrote: "I'm here with your order."

Shahid replied: "Take it with you bro and enjoy the lunch. I forgot to change my address and I'm currently in Maryland."

Delivery driver wrote: "Umm.. ok thanks.

"I wanted to thank you again, it's my brother's birthday today and he is laid to rest not far from where you had me take this delivery.

"I'm having lunch with him today because of you. You have no idea how much that truly means to me. I truly appreciate it."

Social media users flooded the post with comments reacting to the lovely gesture.

One person wrote: "That was so beautiful! You just never know what someone is dealing with! Be kind."

Another said: "Love that this worked out the way it did. You were a blessing in someone's day without even knowing that's what would happen. Blessings to you!"

A third replied: "Signs? Synchronicity? Relatives looking down? Idk [I don't know] what to call this but it's something."

While someone else added: "Everything happens for a reason."
