A man has faced court after allegedly gunning down another man in the middle of a suburban street.

James Slater, 31, came before Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday charged with one count of murder,

He was not required to speak during the short hearing.

Magistrate Steven Raleigh was told Slater was a First Nations person but there were no other custody management issues.

No other information was given during the brief session and there was no application for bail.

Emergency services were called to a man with critical injuries at an intersection in Strathtulloh, in Melbourne's west, on Thursday.

The 36-year-old victim died at the scene.

Previously, police said two men, the victim and a 63-year-old, were at the intersection before a fight broke out with a third male and several shots were fired.

They allege Slater left the scene but was arrested on Sunday almost 95km away in Skye, in Melbourne's outer southeast.

Slater was remanded in custody and will return to court on July 27.
