Man dies after medical emergency on flight to Cork Airport

A man has passed away after he fell ill on a flight to Ireland on Tuesday, authorities have confirmed.

The man was a passenger on an Aer Lingus flight from Lanzarote to Cork when the medical emergency occurred.

Cork's Airport Police, fire brigade, and the National Ambulance Service all rushed to the scene on the runway as they stood by waiting for the plane to touch down, CorkBeo reports.

The man was pronounced dead not long after the flight landed. A garda spokesperson said they received a call about the incident and informed CorkBeo that the local coroner has now been notified.

The spokesperson said: "Gardaí received a report of an incident in which a passenger had taken ill on board a flight to Cork Airport yesterday evening, 6th of June 2023. A man was later pronounced deceased and the body was removed from the scene.

"The local coroner was notified."

Cork Airport informed that the the subsequent flight from Cork to Lanzarote was cancelled following the man's death.

A spokesperson for Cork Airport said: "Aer Lingus flight EI878 to Lanzarote has been cancelled. Cork Airport Police and Fire Service personnel, as well as members of the HSE National Ambulance Service, attended a medical emergency at the airport earlier this [Tuesday] evening.

"With respect to the passenger concerned and their family, Cork Airport will not be making any further comment on the matter."
