Man dies after falling ill at Welsh fitness centre

A man has died after falling ill at a Welsh leisure centre. The air ambulance and other emergency services were called to the Glaslyn Byw’n Iach Centre in Porthmadog after the man was taken ill on Monday, February 20.

Despite efforts made to save him by both leisure centre staff and the emergency services, the leisure centre later confirmed the man had died. The leisure centre has remained closed on Tuesday as "a mark of respect", North Wales Live reports. In a statement, the leisure centre said: “We can confirm that a member of the public was taken ill at the Glaslyn Byw’n Iach Centre, Porthmadog, last night.

"Byw’n Iach staff and the emergency services administered first aid immediately, but he sadly passed away. Our thoughts are with the family and friends at this very sad time and we are grateful to the centre’s staff, the emergency services and the air ambulance for their quick and professional response."

A spokesperson added: "More details about the centre’s opening times for the rest of the week will be available on the Byw’n Iach social media accounts and website."

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called to a medical emergency at Canolfan Hamdden Glaslyn in Porthmadog at approximately 6.45pm yesterday evening, February 20. We deployed two emergency ambulances and were supported by the Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service."
