Man City vs Newcastle LIVE

All eyes were on the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night as Manchester City and Newcastle met in the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg. Man City started out as favourites to reach next month’s showpiece at Wembley and got the job done in rather comfortable fashion thanks to a ruthless display in the first-half.

Omar Marmoush, starting ahead of the rested Erling Haaland, helped himself to a brace, while Tijjani Reijnders scored his first Carabao Cup goal to put City 5-0 up on aggregate at the break. Newcastle, who lifted the trophy by beating Liverpool in last season’s final, were brave throughout and did have their chances, but Anthony Elanga’s second half consolation was all they had to show for their efforts across two legs.

City can now look forward to a Carabao Cup final against Arsenal on March 22 as Pep Guardiola seeks to get his hands on the trophy for a fifth time, though faces a tough task at Wembley Stadium. Follow Man City vs Newcastle back below with Standard Sport's dedicated match blog!

  • GOAL! Reijnders adds a third for ruthless Man City

Man City 3-1 Newcastle (agg: 5-1)

21:45 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

83 min: HOW?!?!?

A deep Newcastle free-kick is not dealt with by Man City and Elanga does well at the back post to feed the ball into a dangerous area but none of his team-mates can take advantage.

Newcastle easily could, perhaps should, have had three goals tonight.

At the other end, Cherki plays in Haaland but he is denied by a superb Ramsdale save.

Man City change sees Lewis replace Nico right before a corner.

Man City 3-1 Newcastle (agg: 5-1)

21:41 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

80 min: Man City just going through the motions now with less than ten minutes on the clock. You would figure that Marmoush will be eager to complete his hat-trick though.

He almost does after being picked out by Haaland but flashes a shot over the bar.

Man City 3-1 Newcastle (agg: 5-1)

21:39 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Man City 3-1 Newcastle (agg: 5-1)

21:33 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

72 min: How about this for squad depth? Man City are 5-1 up on aggregate and can afford to bring on Haaland, Rodri and Cherki.

Semenyo, O’Reilly and Foden are the ones to make way.

Man City 3-1 Newcastle (agg: 5-1)

21:32 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

70 min: WHAT A MISS!

Newcastle spurn yet another sitter as they break Man City’s offside trap, Barnes squares for Elanga but his finish is so poor.

Man City 3-1 Newcastle (agg: 5-1)

21:29 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

68 min: GOAL DISALLOWED

Barnes slots the ball into the back of the net but the goal is chalked off as Wissa was clearly offside before making the pass.

Man City 3-1 Newcastle (agg: 5-1)

21:28 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

67 min: Just the four goals needed by Newcastle to draw level. Just under 20 minutes to do so, Man City have surrendered leads this season, so who knows?

GOAL! Man City 3-1 Newcastle (agg: 5-1) | Anthony Elanga '63

21:25 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Man City 3-0 Newcastle (agg: 5-0)

21:19 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

57 min: More bad news for Newcastle, VAR agrees with the on-field decision of no penalty. Howe not happy, he is adamant Alleyne fouled Wissa in the area.

Man City 3-0 Newcastle (agg: 5-0)

21:18 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

56 min: As VAR checks for a potential Newcastle penalty, Reijnders misses a golden chance. The ball is teed up nicely by Marmoush but the Dutchman puts his effort wide.

Man City 3-0 Newcastle (agg: 5-0)

21:15 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

53 min: Good defending from Botman as he gets in front of Reijnders to stop the Man City midfielder from adding another goal to the tally.

Man City 3-0 Newcastle (agg: 5-0)

21:09 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

47 min: Nearly an immediate impact from Wissa as he reacts first to a loose ball but sends an effort wide with just Trafford to beat. Newcastle have had some big chances tonight, and that is another.

Man City 3-0 Newcastle (agg: 5-0)

21:08 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

46 min: Confirmation of those changes.

Man City 3-0 Newcastle (agg: 5-0)

20:43 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

41 min: Nico with a shot from distance, but it’s straight at Ramsdale.

Concern for Newcastle now as Gordon has gone down off the ball.

Man City 3-0 Newcastle (agg: 5-0)

20:41 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

40 min: The big question here, albeit the fear for the second half is will this game become like a training match?

City are through and they could drop their intensity.

Man City 3-0 Newcastle (agg: 5-0)

20:39 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

38 min: Sloppy play from Hall is almost punished but he is bailed out by Ramsdale who blocks a shot from Reijnders and is winded for a moment.

Man City 3-0 Newcastle (agg: 5-0)

20:37 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

36 min: Good news for Newcastle, they survive a VAR check for a potential penalty after Semenyo went down under a challenge from Burn in the area.

GOAL! Man City 3-0 Newcastle (agg: 5-0) | Tijjani Reijnders ‘32

20:35 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

32 min: MAN CITY ARE RUNNING RIOT

Newcastle overcommit in the press which leaves a massive gap, Semenyo is denied but Reijnders is on hand for a simple finish, passes the ball into the back of the net.

Man City 2-0 Newcastle (agg: 4-0)

20:33 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

GOAL! Man City 2-0 Newcastle (agg: 4-0) | Omar Marmoush ‘29

20:30 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Man City 1-0 Newcastle (agg: 3-0)

20:27 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

26 min: Man City are playing some good stuff, at times, to beat Newcastle’s aggressive man-to-man press. They get it right again but O’Reilly’s first touch is heavy and the attacking momentum is halted momentarily.

Man City 1-0 Newcastle (agg: 3-0)

20:25 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

24 min: It has been a good response from Newcastle to conceding that early goal. Willock and Gordon have both had big chances to score, but Trafford has made two impressive stops.

Man City 1-0 Newcastle (agg: 3-0)

20:22 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

21 min: CHANCE! Willock wins the flick-on and nods the ball down for Gordon who tries to lift his effort over Trafford but the Man City keeper makes another fine save.

Man City 1-0 Newcastle (agg: 3-0)

20:21 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

20 min: Such a contrast from last night's semi-final second leg.

Newcastle need goals and they are taking chances which is leaving them susceptible at the back.

Semenyo, this time, drags an effort just wide of the post.

Man City 1-0 Newcastle (agg: 3-0)

20:19 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

18 min: Ait-Nouri flies forward down the left-hand side and is allowed to carry the ball unchallenged before Thiaw makes a block to concede a corner fro which Newcastle survive a handball claim, a couple of pot shots and Semenyo’s wicked ball across the face of goal.

Man City 1-0 Newcastle (agg: 3-0)

20:16 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

15 min: Foden slides in and catches Hall with the follow through. No booking for the Man City midfielder and rightly so, not sure that is even a foul.

Newcastle get a free-kick but can’t make the most of it as Ramsey blasts over.

Man City 1-0 Newcastle (agg: 3-0)

20:13 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

12 min: Man City are in the mood for more goals as Reijnders flashes a shot just wide. Though, replays show Ramsdale got fingertips on the ball, otherwise that may have ended up in the back of the net.

Man City 1-0 Newcastle (agg: 3-0)

20:11 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

9 min: Nearly an immediate response from Newcastle as Gordon releases Willock down the middle. The midfielder tries to take the ball around Trafford but the Man City keeper gets a hand on the ball.

GOAL! Man City 1-0 Newcastle (agg: 3-0) | Omar Marmoush ‘7

20:09 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

7 min: MAN CITY SCORE!

Just the start the home side wanted as Omar Marmoush extends Man City’s lead on aggregate.

A bit of fortune about the goal as Dan Burn came across attempting to block the shot, but he ended up deflecting the ball against Marmoush and Aaron Ramsdale did not stand a chance.

Man City 0-0 Newcastle (agg: 2-0)

20:06 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

5 min: Newcastle have been guilty of giving the ball away far too easily a couple of times already. They need to be better in possession and the first goal in this game is so important.

Man City 0-0 Newcastle (agg: 2-0)

20:02 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

1 min: It’s a back five formation for Newcastle and they are on the back foot immediately as Trippier blocks a shot from Marmoush.

Interestingly, Newcastle's 2-0 win at the Etihad Stadium came in this very competition.

Guehi absence explained

18:35 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Man City signed two players in the January transfer window.

However, while Antoine Semenyo - a scorer in the first-leg - can feature tonight, Marc Guehi cannot.

The reason? Well, not because the defender is cup-tied having helped Crystal Palace reach the quarter-final, rather because he was not signed before the tie at St James' Park.

Therefore he is ineligible.

Arsenal await

We already know one half of the equation with regard to this season's Carabao Cup final.

Predicted Newcastle XI

18:25 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Eddie Howe is expected to recall Nick Woltemade to his starting line-up tonight, though Yoane Wissa may have to settle for a place on the bench.

Predicted Newcastle XI (4-3-3): Pope, Trippier, Thiaw, Botman, Hall, Willock, Tonali, Ramsey, Gordon, Woltemade, Barnes.

Predicted Man City XI

18:20 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Rayan Cherki will be assessed ahead of kick-off tonight as Manchester City face Newcastle in the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final.

The French playmaker netted his ninth goal for City in all competitions during Sunday’s 2-2 draw at Tottenham, but was forced off in the second half after receiving treatment following a heavy knock.

Between the posts, James Trafford is expected to keep his place for this cup tie ahead of usual No1 Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Man City predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Trafford; Nunes, Khusanov, Ake, Ait-Nouri; Rodri; O’Reilly, Semenyo, Foden, Marmoush; Haaland.

Howe bullish

18:15 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Eddie Howe insists his Newcastle side are capable of scoring goals at the Etihad Stadium tonight.

Newcastle trail 2-0 from the first-leg, meaning they must score at least twice to have any hope of reaching the Carabao Cup final.

Despite the tall order, Howe has revealed belief has not wavered in the camp of the holders.

He said: "Collectively, the spirit within the group is there. It's going to be an almighty challenge and there's no bigger challenge than Manchester City away but we believe in ourselves and will give it a good go.

"The second goal in the first game was a big disappointment for us coming so late but we still believe. We believe we have the players that can go to any stadium in the world and perform and score goals."

Pep Guardiola wants Man City to 'spend more money'

18:10 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Pep Guardiola has jokingly fired a shot at Manchester City’s hierarchy over the club’s transfer spending, claiming that he does not “understand how” they have not spent more money.

It came a day after the winter transfer window slammed shut, with City securing the £20million signing of Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace earlier in the window, as well as the £64m arrival of Antoine Semenyo at the very start of January.

In the summer, City brought in a whole host of new players, with Gianluigi Donnarumma, Rayan Ait-Nouri, Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Cherki, James Trafford and young midfielder Sverre Nypan all signed.

However, ahead of his side’s Carabao Cup semi-final second leg with Newcastle on Wednesday, Guardiola complained to reporters about his side’s transfer business.

Man City vs Newcastle prediction

17:50 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

It remains to be seen whether Eddie Howe will decide to plump for a greater physical presence up top and play Nick Woltemade, or he could continue with Anthony Gordon through the middle, flanked by Harvey Barnes and Anthony Elanga or Jacob Murphy.

Man City, however, will be wounded from that late Spurs comeback and Guardiola will be sure to want a reaction here.

Man City to win, 3-1.

Newcastle team news

17:45 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes has sat out the last three games with an ankle problem, is “doing well”.

However, the midfielder is unlikely to be fit to face City, according to Eddie Howe.

Joelinton’s groin injury could keep him out for a matter of weeks rather than months, while Lewis Miley and Sven Botman could return to the starting XI.

Man City team news

17:40 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Man City are still juggling an injury crisis in defence, with Josko Gvardiol and John Stones still out and Ruben Dias only returning to training on Monday.

The signing of Marc Guehi earlier in the transfer window shored up their defence somewhat, but the former Crystal Palace centre-back is ineligible for this game.

Jeremy Doku is injured once again after he was taken off in the 2-0 win over Galatasaray, while Rayan Cherki is a doubt with a knock picked up against Tottenham.
