Man City chairman praises club legend Mike Summerbee for OBE award

Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak has led the tributes to Mike Summerbee for his "richly deserved" OBE.

Summerbee made more than 450 appearances for the Blues during his distinguished playing career and the thrilling, triumphant football he produced alongside Colin Bell and Franny Lee will be honoured in statue form outside the Etihad Stadium. The club great still serves as an ambassador at the Etihad and can often still be spotted mingling with supporters on European away days.

Since recovering from prostate cancer that was diagnosed in 2012, Summerbee has also been an active campaigner for Prostate Cancer UK and The Christie Hospital in Manchester. He has been awarded an OBE by the Queen in recognition of his services to football and charity.

City's chairman spoke warmly about the footballing and human side of Summerbee as he led the tributes for the latest honour bestowed upon the club ambassador.

"We are all absolutely delighted that Mike has been awarded an OBE,” said Al Mubarak “It is such richly deserved recognition for his immense contribution to the game both as a player and as an ambassador.

“But most importantly, it is a recognition of his selfless and enduring commitment to charitable causes and to the many communities he works on behalf of. Mike still contributes so much to the City family and I know that today the City family couldn’t be prouder of him or more pleased for him."
