Manchester City are optimistic they can sign Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic by the end of June, according to reports.
It seems Pep Guardiola is already making contingency plans should either Bernardo Silva or Ilkay Gundogan leave the Etihad this summer. Club captain Gundogan was named among the list of released players this week, although that does not indicate a final decision.
In fact, both players have stayed coy about what lies ahead, neither committing to staying or leaving. However, it seems Guardiola is hoping to bolster his midfield ranks anyway.
The Evening Standard claims City wish to get Kovacic through the door within the next fortnight for a fee of around £35m. The Croat is said to have accepted contract terms.

Kovacic is one of a number of players expected to leave Stamford Bridge this summer as Chelsea try to balance the books within Financial Fair Play regulations.
Meanwhile, The Telegraph is the latest outlet to report that Kyle Walker is on Bayern Munich’s shortlist of summer targets.
Bayern are expected to lose Benjamin Pavard this summer and will be looking for a replacement. Thomas Tuchel apparently has Walker on his radar with only a year remaining on his deal.
AC Milan are also said to be tracking his situation with there being little sign of a contract extension forthcoming.
