Man City agree fee with Chelsea to sign midfielder Mateo Kovacic

Manchester City have agreed a fee with Chelsea to sign midfielder Mateo Kovacic and the Croatian looks set to become the first new arrival through the door at the Etihad this summer.

City will pay an initial £25million to sign the 29-year-old, with a further £5million due in potential add-ons.

Kovacic is set for a medical at the City Football Academy in the coming days and will link up with his new teammates in time for the club's pre-season tour of Japan and South Korea.

The former Real Madrid midfielder made 221 appearances in his five years at Chelsea and brings plenty of Premier League and Champions League experience to the Etihad.

Pep Guardiola has long been an admirer of Kovacic and sees his versatility across midfield as being ideal for his City side.

Midfield is also an area that is likely to need strengthening at the Etihad this season. Ilkay Gundogan's contract expires next week and he is still mulling over an offer to sign for Barcelona, with a renewal from City also on the table.

Bernardo Silva could also leave the club amid interest from Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, with the Portuguese open to the idea of a new challenge away from the Etihad.

City had made Jude Bellingham their top midfield target, but the teenager has signed for Real and the Blues have moved quickly to strengthen their ranks in the centre of the pitch.
