Man charged with murder after 72-year-old stabbed to death in Wembley street

A man has been charged with murder after a 72-year-old man was stabbed to death in a residential street in Wembley.

The victim - named on Saturday as Richard Brathwaite - died after being found stabbed in Cromwell Road, Wembley, around midday on Thursday.

Derek Brown, also aged 72, of Cromwell Road, Wembley has been charged with murder, section 18 GBH with intent, and possession of a bladed article in a public place, said the Met police.

He appeared in custody at Willesden Magistrates’ Court on Saturday, when he was remanded in custody to next appear at the Old Bailey on Tuesday (March 26).

Police and paramedics were called to Cromwell Road on Thursday lunchtime following reports of a stabbing.

Mr Brathwaite was found with a stab wound, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

A woman, aged in her 70s, also suffered injuries during the incident, police said on Saturday. Her injuries were not life-threatening.

A post-mortem on Saturday gave Mr Brathwaite’s cause of death as a stab injury, said the Met.

His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

Detective Superintendent Tony Bellis, leading local policing in Brent, said in a statement on Friday: “Residents will notice a more visible police presence in the coming days, not only at the scene, but also to provide reassurance to the community following this tragic incident.

“We fully understand that violence, such as this, sends shockwaves through the community and I urge anyone with concerns to approach officers on patrol or contact their local neighbourhood team.”

Anyone who witnessed this incident or has information should call police on 101 or post on X @MetCC quoting 3135/21Mar.
