A man aged in his 30s has been arrested in connection to an attack that happened in Co Cork on Monday afternoon.
A teenage girl was targeted near Fermoy town centre at around 1:20pm.
It is understood that two other teenagers heard the young girl screaming, and discovered the attack when they went to check on the situation.
One of the brave youths that went to help was also attacked and sent to a Cork hospital to be treated for his wounds - which are not believed to be life-threatening.
Gardai have launched an investigation into the assault and are looking over CCTV footage in the area in order to identify the attackers.
In a statement to the Irish Mirror, a Garda spokesperson said: “Gardai are investigating an alleged assault that occurred at approximately 1:20pm this afternoon, in Fermoy, Co. Cork.
“A man in his 30s has been arrested in relation to this incident and he is currently being detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at Fermoy Garda station.”
