A man who allegedly threatened to assault another person while armed with an axe in a road-rage incident in Adelaide's north has been arrested.

Police allege the man had been driving erratically on Smart and McIntyre roads in Modbury, and when his car and the victim's stopped in nearby Para Hills he threatened to assault a person in the other car.

Serious and Organised Crime Branch officers conducted a search of a Salisbury East home on Wednesday and allegedly located a .25 calibre handgun, ammunition and two gel blasters.

An axe was also allegedly seized from the man's vehicle.

The 23-year-old Salisbury East man was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, driving disqualified, three counts of possessing a firearm without a licence, and insecure ammunition.

He was bailed to appear in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court in April.

A 29-year-old woman who lives at the address was reported for three counts of possessing a firearm without a licence and insecure ammunition, and will be summonsed to appear in court at a later date.

"The possession of illegal firearms and other weapons by anyone in the community is a serious concern, especially by anyone allegedly engaging in such erratic and violent behaviour," Detective Chief Inspector David Huddy said.
