A man has allegedly gone on a 20-minute joy ride in a stolen police van after an altercation with officers north of Brisbane.

He was arrested after crashing the vehicle and fleeing on foot, police say.

Inspector Joseph Zitny said officers were responding to reports of an armed man at Narangba after 3am on Tuesday when they confronted the 37-year-old.

Officers used stun guns in the altercation before the man drove off in the police van, he said.

The man is accused of crashing the vehicle about 20 minutes later at Mango Hill and leaving on foot before being arrested nearby.

He was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries under police guard.

Insp Zitny told reporters on Tuesday the man was now assisting police after being discharged from hospital.

"I think it is fortunate in the circumstances that ... no one was injured," he said.

"It could have been a lot worse."

Insp Zitny could not provide details about how the man stole the police van but confirmed there would be an internal review.
