Man, 31, due in court after being charged in connection with murder of Ashling Murphy

A man will appear before a court tonight charged in connection to the murder of Ashling Murphy.

The 31-year-old Slovakian national has been in custody since yesterday afternoon.

He was quizzed on suspicion of murder by specialist investigators from the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

This evening, after consultation with the Director of Public Prosecution, the man was station charged.

He will now be escorted to Tullamore courthouse tonight and appear before a special sitting of the district court at 8.15pm.

Primary school teacher Ashling was killed after she went for a run along the grand canal in the town at 4pm last Wednesday.

The 23-year-old - who was from Blueball, just outside Tullamore - was laid to rest on Tuesday.

A garda spokesman confirmed: "Gardaí investigating the fatal assault on Ashling Murphy on Wednesday 12th January 2022 have charged the man, aged in his 30s, who was arrested yesterday, Tuesday 18th January 2022.

"He is due to appear before a special sitting of Tullamore District Court this evening, Wednesday 19th January 2022 at 8.15pm."

The man was arrested from St James's Hospital in Dublin yesterday, where he had been since he admitted himself with wounds last Thursday.

Once arrested at the hospital - where officers have been keeping a close eye on him - the suspect was put into an unmarked dark Hyundai Tucson flanked by plain clothes officers and was escorted down to Tullamore Garda Station, where they arrived just after 12.25pm.

His DNA and prints were taken before a solicitor was appointed and questioning got under way.

He then took his eight hours break for a rest before questioning resumed this morning.

The man has lived outside Tullamore for some time but has extended family in south Dublin.

This morning, a second arrest was made of a man in his 30s who is being questioned in relation to potential withholding of information.

He has been released without charge with a file going to the DPP.
