Man, 21, killed after horror BMW smash on motorway where car left road

A 21-year-old man has tragically died after a motorway smash where the BMW he was travelling in left the road in Northern Ireland.

Phillip Rainey, from the Omagh area, died at the scene after a single vehicle crash on the M1 motorway in Dungannon on Wednesday morning at 10.40am, said police.

The M1 motorway was closed in both directions near the Stangmore junction following the horrific incident.

Police confirmed the death of Mr Rainey and are now appealing for witnesses to help them in their investigation into what happened.

The crash led to queues of several miles with the Northern Ireland Fire Service having sent two appliances to the scene and the motorway was not reopened until Wednesday night.

“Police received a report at around 10:40am, that a white BMW 520 car had left the east-bound carriageway of the motorway, near the Stangmore junction," said Sergeant Amanda McIvor from the police's Collision Investigation Unit, reported Armaghi.

“Emergency services attended but Phillip sadly died at the scene as a result of his injuries.

“We are appealing to anyone who was travelling east-bound on the M1, in the area of the Stangmore junction, between 10:30am and 10:40am on Wednesday morning, and who has dash-cam footage from that area, to contact the Collision Investigation Unit on 101, and quote reference number 496 07/09/22.”

Northern Ireland Police tweeted at 4pm: “Police continue to advise motorists that the M1 motorway remains closed in both directions at junction 14 at Dungannon due to a serious road traffic collision. Please seek alternative routes for your journey.”

And then added at 9.45pm: “The M1 motorway at Dungannon has now re-opened.”
