Malvika scales new high, achieves career-best 53 in world badminton rankings

NAGPUR: A second round finish in the Thailand Open gave Malvika Bansod her career-best badminton ranking. In the latest world rankings announced by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) the 20-year-old touched a new high.

The city girl moved four places up and is now ranked 53rd among the women's singles shuttlers in the world.

In the rankings released by the BWF on Tuesday, Malvika jumped from the 57th to the 53rd position with 34,312 points. For her entry into the second round of back-to-back Super 500 tournaments of the World Tour events, Malvika gained a total of 7,200 points to reach her career best rank in the women's singles. In the Korea Open played in April and during the recently held Thailand Open, Malvika gained 3,600 points each.

"I am glad that I could perform well in my first appearance in the Thailand Open. But my best is yet to come, and I am working hard for it with my team," Malvika told TOI.

As per the BWF standings, Malvika jumped a place up and is now India No 3 behind PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal. Malvika is being closely followed by Aakarshi Kashyap and Ashmita Chaliha at the 57th and 65th position respectively.
