'Make them free': Supermarkets renaming 'feminine hygiene' aisle sparks debate

Supermarkets changing the name of their ‘feminine products aisle’ to ‘period products’ has sparked debate amongst many Manchester Evening News readers. Aldi has followed the lead of Asda and Boots in doing this, so now items such as tampons, towels and panty liners are now referred to as ‘period products’ rather than 'feminine hygiene' products.

The move to the more inclusive name will mean that people who have periods, but don’t necessarily identify as female, such as trans men, will feel more comfortable shopping in the section. Aldi’s website has also been changed to reflect this new stance.

Many readers took this opportunity to suggest that these products should be made free or cheaper due to periods being a normal bodily function.
