Magnitude 6.7 quake strikes tip of NZ's South Island

A magnitude 6.7 quake has struck off New Zealand's lower South Island. (Ross Setford/AAP PHOTOS)

People in New Zealand's Southland district have been advised to stay away from the coast following a 6.7 magnitude earthquake.

The large earthquake struck at 2:43pm NZDT (12:43pm AEDT) and was epicentred just off the southwestern tip of South Island.
