Machete attack near Lanarkshire primary school as police hunt thugs responsible

A manhunt is underway after a machete attack near a primary school in South Lanarkshire.

At around 8.35pm on Thursday a man was assaulted by another man, armed with a knife, in Rhyber Avenue, Lanark, close to Lanark Primary School.

The suspect, along with three other men, vandalised the windows of a house on the same road before fleeing the scene in a dark-coloured car.

Emergency crews were called and the victim, aged 31, was rushed to Glasgow's Queen Elizabeth University Hospital with head injuries.

As of Friday morning he was still in hospital where medics describe his condition as stable.

Police are yet to establish the exact motive for the attack but believe that it was targeted.

Officers probing the incident urge any witnesses to come forward.

Information can be passed on anonymously.

Detective Sergeant Jim Williamson said:“Whilst the motive for this attack has still to be established, we believe that the man, for whatever reason, was specifically targeted.

“At this time we have no description of the suspects. Rhyber Avenue is residential and I am sure that people would have seen, or at least heard the attack take place.

“If you have any information about the incident, then please contact police at Wishaw via 101 quoting reference number 3333 of Thursday, June 9.

"Alternatively, details can be passed anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
