M6 delays as car on fire while caravan overturns on nearby slip road

Drivers are being faced with queues on the M6 near Greater Manchester after two incidents within a few miles of each other. Delays are building up on the southbound carriageway near Warrington after a car fire between junctions 20 at Lymm and 19 at Knutsford this afternoon (June 26).

It comes as traffic heading northbound is being affected by an overturned caravan on the slip road taking traffic from the M6 onto the M56 westbound at Lymm. Problems began on the stretch of Cheshire motorway at around 12.15pm, according to the Inrix traffic monitoring system.

In an update at 2pm, Inrix said the M6 southbound was 'partially blocked' between the two junctions, causing 'heavy traffic'. North West Motorway Police confirmed to the Manchester Evening News that the incident was a car fire on the southbound carriageway, towards junction 19.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service and National Highways are dealing with the incident. Data from Google shows congestion backing up as far as junction 21 at Woolston as a result of the fire.

Meanwhile, the slip road taking traffic from the M6 northbound to the M56 westbound at Lymm has been closed off due to an overturned caravan. North West Motorway Police received a call about the incident at 12.45pm.

In an statement posted on Twitter, a spokesperson for North West Motorway Police added: "We are taking reports of an overturned caravan on the M6 to M56 Link at Lymm. M6 junction 20 northbound to the M56 west.

"Traffic is building up and there will be delays in the area. Please plan ahead if you need to travel."
