A spokesperson from Avon and Somerset Police said: "The M5 is currently closed northbound between junctions 19 and 21.
"It follows the sudden death of a man who is believed to have fallen onto the carriageway from an overbridge at approximately 12.20pm.
"The section of the motorway is likely to be closed for a considerable amount of time and so we’d advise motorists to use an alternative route.
"Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to phone 101 and tell the call handler they're phoning in relation to log 384 of today (Monday, 24 January)."
Webcam footage from Highways England showed near-stationary traffic in the affected area of the M5 northbound.
A diversion route was put in place by National Highways to direct motorists onto an alternative route away from the affected area.
As of 2pm all lanes had reopened with delays to traffic expected to ease later on this afternoon.
