M4, M5, M32 fuel protests: Police warn drivers to expect delays

A warning to motorists has been issued by police ahead of planned fuel protests set to take place tomorrow (Monday, July 4). Several routes will be affected including the M5.

A guide to the proposed blockades has been released and confirmed this evening by Avon and Somerset police. They have also confirmed other protests against the rise in fuel price could happen on the same day and for drivers to check for any updates before they travel. Bristol Live will be covering all the traffic chaos and delays here from 6:30am on Monday.

Posting on their Facebook page, police said: "While we appreciate most of you will not want to be thinking about Monday morning just yet, please be aware of the planned protest activity expected to cause travel delays across our force area tomorrow."

Superintendent Paul Wigginton said: “Working alongside Gwent Police, we are engaging with the various organisers of these protests.

“People have a right to peaceful protest and liaison teams from both Gwent and Avon and Somerset have been working to understand campaigners’ plans so public safety is maintained and to reduce disruption to others.

“Nevertheless, drivers can expect journey times will likely be longer than normal, especially on motorways and main roads during the busiest times of the day. We advise motorists consider any alternative travel plans available and ensure they are suitably prepared in case they are delayed.”

The protest on the M5 is a slow-moving road block starting in Somerset and moving northward to the Almondsbury Interchange. From there it is expected to head on to the M4 and then the M32 towards the city centre. Motorists have described the protest as 'selfish'.
