M&S’s viral strawberry sandwich is returning to shelves, and it’s getting a pistachio chocolate upgrade (big news for Dubai chocolate fans). The original version already made waves when it landed, thanks to its unexpected Japanese-inspired “fruit sando” format and its dessert-like approach to a sandwich. It didn’t take long for it to sell out.
For lovers of the sweet treat, the supermarket has announced it’s making its return. But this year’s version has had a serious upgrade. Replacing the cream filling are two separate sweet spreads: a fairtrade Belgian chocolate spread and pistachio creme, with British strawberries sandwiched in the middle.
The bread itself follows the dessert theme, too. Forget a standard white loaf, or even last edition’s brioche base. This version instead has a cocoa-enriched, sweetened bread, designed to match the richer fillings.

M&S chocolate, strawberry and pistachio sandwich
When the original came out, our reviewer Daisy Lester put it to the test, writing that it was “surprisingly chunky”, with presentation that was very on-point, unsurprising from M&S.
“Creamy and fresh-tasting, it’s not too stodgy and perfectly balances the sweetness and tartness of the strawberries. The red diamond fruit is the star of the show, with the rich and succulent strawberries carrying the flavour of the sandwich,” she wrote.
Daisy added: “The flavour is exactly right for summer. The strawberry and creme sandwich is perfect for a picnic with pals or an alfresco afternoon snack. It’s too indulgent and rich to swap out for your usual office meal deal, but it’s great for the occasional sweet treat.”
However, she noted that at £2.80 the original already felt quite steep for a single sandwich, and the new version has pushed that up further to £3.50.
