Georgia shooting in Vienna GA: 2 dead and up to 35 injured after gunfire erupts at homecoming party - here's what we know about the investigation

A Georgia shooting at a large homecoming block party in Vienna, Georgia, left two people dead and up to 35 others injured early Sunday, after gunfire erupted at a gathering attended by more than 1,000 people.

The shooting happened at about 1:25 a.m. as deputies from the Dooly County Sheriff’s Office were patrolling the area, as per reports. Deputies found two people dead and multiple others injured after shots were fired.

Vienna Georgia Shooting Erupts at Homecoming Party

The gathering in Vienna, GA, was a homecoming block party that drew more than 1,000 people.

Sheriff Craig Peavy told WMAZ that shots were fired at about 50 people in two locations roughly a block apart. The shooting led to a major emergency response, with injured people taken to hospitals for treatment.

According to the reports, about 25 people were taken to hospitals, while the total number of injured was reported at up to 35.

Georgia Mass Shooting Leaves 2 Men Dead

The two people who died were men aged 20 and 23, according to Dooly County Coroner Brett Walls, as reported by CBS News. Their identities had not been released.

However, officials had not specified how many of those injured had actually been shot or how serious their injuries were.

Autopsies were being conducted on the two people who died as investigators continued working to establish what happened.

What We Know About the Shooting in Vienna GA

State Representative Patty Stinson told 13WMAZ, “It was very heartbreaking to wake up this morning to learn that a mass shooting took place in Vienna. I'm so sorry this has happened to all of these families who have been affected. I want to thank Sheriff Peavy and his team for all that they're doing. I'm on my way to Vienna to meet with the mayor and city council so we can address this together as a team.”

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation joined the case at the request of the Dooly County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities had not publicly identified a suspect or announced a motive in the information reported Sunday. The investigation remained ongoing.

The Guardian reported that deputies were monitoring the crowd when the shooting happened. The report also described the incident as one of several mass shootings reported in the U.S. over the weekend.

Mass Shooting Georgia Investigation Continues

The identities of the two men killed had not been released, and authorities had not announced a suspect or motive.

For now, investigators are working to determine what happened during the large gathering in Vienna, Georgia. Two men were killed and up to 35 people were injured after gunfire broke out at the homecoming block party.

Authorities have not said how many of those injured were actually shot, and the investigation remains ongoing.
