Two people were killed and at least 25 other injured when a shooting erupted at a homecoming block party in Vienna, Georgia, early on Sunday, according to authorities.
In another high-profile mass shooting in the US over the weekend, a 12-year-old girl was shot and killed and three others were wounded after gunfire evidently broke out over a parking spot in a Baltimore park on Saturday, officials said.
The violence in Georgia occurred at a gathering of more than 1,000 people, local sheriff Craig Peavy told area news outlet WMAZ. Shots were fired at about 50 people in two locations about a block apart just after 1am on Sunday, Peavy told WMAZ.
The pair killed at the scene were not immediately identified, and neither were suspects or a possible motive for the gunfire. Peavy added that about 25 people were taken to the hospital and as 35 people may have been wounded.
Meanwhile, with respect to the shooting in Baltimore, police commissioner Richard Worley said two suspects were being sought after two different types of gun cartridges were found at the scene of the violence near a youth football event at Leon Day Park.
“What we know is that there was some type of argument between two cowards, and of course they both opened fire on each other,” Worley said at a Saturday night news conference. “The dispute most likely occurred from a stupid parking spot, and they get into a fight, and the two cowards pull guns on each other.”
Worley said the 12-year-old girl who was killed in that case was a bystander at a nearby field, who was hit when one of the shooters “fired multiple rounds down range”.
A 25-year-old woman with the girl was shot, too. And so were two men, ages 23 and 28, according to police. None of the three wounded victims were believed to have life-threatening injuries, police said.
The 12-year-old girl was pronounced dead at the scene, and paramedics took the woman to the hospital. The two other victims walked into a nearby hospital with injuries.
“Two grown men got into an argument, and now a 12-year-old is gone,” Baltimore mayor Brandon Scott said to reporters. “What happened out here today, is one of the most disgusting things I’ve ever seen in my life because that baby was just out here, at homecoming for this youth football league is out here every single day, trying to keep young people safe, trying to keep young men and young women on the right path.”
There had been at least 355 mass shootings reported in the US so far for the year as of Sunday, which was the 277th day of 2026, according to the Gun Violence Archive. The archive, a nonpartisan reference resources, defines mass shootings as cases in which at least four victims are killed or wounded.
The US perennially has high rates of such shootings, fueling calls from some quarters for more substantial federal gun control. But Congress has not passed such measures over the years.
