Lucky escape for lorry driver blown over by strong winds in Stanhope

The driver of a HGV has had a lucky escape after strong winds overturned his vehicle on a road in Stanhope, County Durham.

The lorry tipped over at Meadows Edge, an exposed road close to the Northumbrian border, at around lunchtime on Wednesday.

Emergency services attended the incident where the driver was reported to be trapped but fortunately they managed to get out themselves.

A fire engine was sent to the scene but crews were able to leave after 20 minutes.

A County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "Reports of a tipped HGV with person reported trapped, came into CDDFRS control at 12:16pm yesterday, at Meadows Edge Stanhope.

"One appliance from Stanhope attended the incident, however on arrival the occupant had managed to self-extricate. Fire crews left the scene at 12:36pm.”

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson also confirmed their attendance at the scene.

Spokesperson said: "We received a call at 12.18pm yesterday afternoon to reports of a road traffic incident on Meadows Edge, Stanhope. We dispatched one specialist paramedic crew and treated and discharged one patient with minor injuries on-scene."
