Lucas Torreira is due to report back for pre-season training at Arsenal this week as the club continues with their attempts to resolve his future.

Torreira has fallen out of favour at Arsenal and he spent last season on loan at Fiorentina, where it was thought he would sign permanently this summer.

Fiorentina, however, refused to pay the pre-agreed fee for Torreira, believed to be around £12.5million, and he has been left in limbo.

The midfielder has spent some of the summer working at home in Uruguay, but he is due to return to Arsenal for pre-season this week. He will join the squad for the pre-season tour of the USA, unless a move is sorted quickly.

Torreira, along with the likes of Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard, had been given an extended holiday after playing international fixtures last month.

The most likely destination for Torreira remains Italy, with Roma one of those keen on signing him. Juventus have also shown an interest over the past month or so.

The 26-year-old’s dream move would be a transfer to Boca Juniors, but he accepts they are unlikely to be able to afford him.

Torreira currently has one year to run on his Arsenal contract and both he and the club expect him to leave this summer.
