Love Island's Tasha explains 'superpower' hearing loss as she's supported by Strictly's Rose

Love Island's Tasha has opened up about her "superpower" hearing loss ahead of her stint on the show.

ITV2 bosses announced that the model and dancer, aged 23, will be on the show this summer - and she is the first ever deaf contestant to be involved.

Her friends and family - who will be running her social media accounts for her as she attempts to find her dream partner on the show - have revealed Tasha has always fought for visibility and it is her "driving force".

In a post on her Instagram page, Tasha's step-in social media person shared more about her disability and what it means to her.

The caption read: "Her superpower - Tasha wanted to give you all a little snippet of her superpower and her story. Visibility has always been her driving force."

The post then began: "What is my superpower?" before continuing: "I have sensory loss which means the small hairs in the cochlear were missing and damaged when I was born. We still don't know why."

It added: "Did I learn sign language/BSL? Yes I did, in fact the whole family did when I was young. As I got older I became less reliant on it because of the cochlear implant and learning to lip read."

Another question said: "What is the difference between a hearing aid and a cochlear implant?"

The description read: "Hearing aids simply amplify sound, but if the brain can't understand the noise it's just noise. The implant has small fibre optics pushed in to the cochlear to replace the missing hairs that stimulate the fluid and send intelligent messages to my brain. The outer part is a computer that is programmed for the frequency of my loss."

"Can I hear anything and what do people sound like?" another question asked.

Tasha's response was: "When the outer piece of my device is taken off I cannot hear anything. I feel beats and vibrations. People sound a little robotic but my brain has adapted to it and I also rely on lip reading and body language."

In the comments section, Tasha was supported by many, including the likes of Strictly star Rose Ayling-Ellis.

Tasha wears a cochlear implant and is very open about her hearing, revealing that many call her "inspirational" because she likes to talk about her disability and raise awareness of her condition.

She will join already announced Liam Llewellyn, Indiyah Polack, Dami Hope and Paige Thorne on the show.

Tasha has vowed she will do whatever she needs to find the man of her dreams - including "stepping on people's toes".

Asked if she's competitive, she shared: "It's a tough one because I'm a girls' girl but it is a dating show and I'm here to find my man. I may have to step on toes but I'll do it in the nicest way possible."

*Love Island starts at 9pm Monday 6th June on ITV2 and ITV Hub. Episodes are available the following morning on BritBox.
