The Love Island final was watched by 1.1 million on Monday night, receiving the lowest ratings for a final since the second series back in 2015.
Contestants Kai Fagan and Sanam Harrinanan were crowned the winners of the ITV2 show, concluding what has been considered one of the least favoured series of Love Island so far.
The ratings recorded for Monday’s final is a huge drop from last year’s final in August, which received 3 million viewers. The show was also beaten by The Last of Us finale in ratings, as 1.2 million tuned on to watch the HBO drama on Sky Atlantic on Monday night.
This update comes as it’s been revealed that couple Kai and Sanam, both 24, won the latest series by a landslide victory of 44% of the vote, bagging a £50,000 cash prize.
The pair, who met during Casa Amor, beat runners-up Ron Hall and Lana Jenkins, who received 30% of the vote, and Samie Elishi and Tom Clare, who received 24%.
Perhaps the most shocking final result of all was fourth place couple Shaq Muhammad and Tanya Manhenga, who received only 2% of the vote.
Sanam has made history on the show as she has become the first bombshell to be named Love Island champion since the series began.
Before the winning result was announced on Monday, social worker Sanam accidentally slipped the L-word when discussing her blossoming romance with Kai, as he said “watch this space” when asked if they are going make things official.
Following their win, a clearly surprised Sanam said: “I can’t believe it”, as Kai was rendered speechless.
She continued: “For me, it was always Kai, like I always said he was my number one. Obviously, he is a very attractive guy but I fell in love with everything. Everything about him, I just loved it. I really didn’t think I was gonna be here. I’m going to cry.”
This year, the contestants were given a social media ban, preventing their loved ones for representing them on their accounts, which has impacted the growth of their social following considerably.
While past Islanders have garnered millions of followers after the show, the numbers for this year’s cast have dwindled, with winners Kai and Sanam having under 150,000 followers each following the final.
