ITV dating show Love Island returned to our screens on Monday night but it wasn't long before viewers were threatening to complain to Ofcom over a kiss shared by two of the show's contestants. Gemma Owen, 19 was seen sharing a kiss with Davide Sanclimenti, 27, during the first episode and some fans claimed they weren't happy.
Not everyone was amused by the display of affection and many fans took to Twitter to say they would complain to Ofcom if the pair couple up during the series, after realising the eight year age difference between them. Former professional footballer and sports pundit Michael Owen's daughter Gemma, 19, jumped at the chance to share a kiss with 27-year-old Davide, where she was instructed to snog the "boy she fancied the most", OK! reports.
After showing the pair sharing a kiss, Gemma was then seen saying: "Davide is the guy I'm most attracted to, but yeah I did feel a bit guilty". Viewers were quick to take to social media to comment on the moment as it aired.
Vanessa tweeted: "If Gemma is paired with someone above the age of 25 I’m gonna file a complaint with OFCOM #LoveIsland" and Jem added: "If Davide even chats to Gemma I’m calling ofcom and the police #loveisland".
Jess agreed, posting: "If gemma and davide end up together the ofcom complaints are gunna be WILD it’s just so wrong #LoveIsland". A fourth viewer @its_lelz_ added: "I’m sorry but how old is Davide, because if he’s over 25 and he ends up with Gemma, i’m definitely complaining with OFCOM #loveisland".
Celine also tweeted: "If Gemma is paired with anybody above 22/23, I’m gonna complain to ofcom #loveisland". Fynn added: "The fact Davide is 27 and Gemma was born in 2003 is a bit mad #loveisland".
Other fans were "concerned" over the age gap, Emma tweeted: "The fact that andrew and davide are EIGHT years older than gemma doesn't sit right with me- anyone else?#loveisland" whilst Komal Brar said: "I feel like the minimum age should be 21. She’s 19 and I’m a bit concerned for her #loveisland".
The eight week long series started last night with a new twist, as all the contestants were paired by the public. The reality programme reached out to viewers asking them to vote on who they thought would be best suited together.
Gemma had been coupled with 22-year-old Liam Llewelyn but it's Davide who seems to have got her attention. After her kiss she said that it had "screwed" Liam over and added "hopefully he doesn't hate me".
Love Island continues tonight from 9pm on ITV2 and ITV Hub. Episodes are available the following morning on BritBox.
