The Kentucky General Assembly used this legislative session to modify the state’s crime victims’ compensation program. The bill’s author was recognized by her fellow senators.
Louisville Democratic Senator Denise Harper Angel admits seeking assistance for crime victims has been a key priority. A number of senators applauded Harper Angle for her work in this area. Harper Angel said a removal of statute of limitations for claims will impact backlogged rape kits.
“You know we found over 4000 of those and so some of those individuals now could apply for assistance through the crime victims compensation board,” said Harper Angel.
Harper Angel said other changes include allowing for online applications for crime victim assistance, expanding the program to include various languages and an ability to track a request.
The retiring legislator noted the maximum assistance amount increases under this measure.
“It increases the entire caps from 30,000 to 50,000, provides money for tattoo removal for victims of human trafficking, temporary re-location, changing of locks and windows, and crime scene cleanup,” said Harper Angel.
Harper Angel said there is also a provision tied to funeral expenses. She calls it a very comprehensive bill.
