Louise Redknapp fought back tears on Lorraine on Thursday as she unveiled an emotional hut transformation for a woman who lost her husband to Covid-19.
The revamp was part of the ITV show’s We’ve Got This series, which has seen the 47-year-old singer-songwriter help to transform people’s lives alongside American lifestyle expert Paul Wharton.
Liz, 61, contacted the show after her husband and childhood sweetheart Gordon died after contracting coronavirus in January of last year and the pair travelled to her home in the west coast of Scotland.
Liz emotionally told viewers of her loss, saying: “My whole future disappeared. Gordon had a dream of getting a hut and just by chance we came across this place and we fell in love with it.
“We were like teenagers again. The first time I went in I had to leave and go home. I just cried and cried.”
She tearfully told Louise and Paul: “Right now it’s just too sore. When I go in I’m just looking for him. I struggle every day. I get up and I’ve got this pain in my stomach. It doesn’t go away.”
Louise replied: “I think we can be so guilty for being happy again. You know Gordon would want you to smile again and be happy and laugh.
“You’ve got to somehow think, I do deserve to be happy. No one is going to think bad of you for smiling and enjoying this place. You deserve that.”
The couple called themselves the 'Nutter Hutters' and had planned on spending their retirement years in their hut together.
The ITV show unveiled the transformation of the space to viewers and Liz tearful said it was “amazing” as presenter Louise fought tears to comfort her.
Louise said of the new decor: “It was really dark and heavy before with the red carpet and the black sofas - we wanted this to be a space where when you come in here, it has a really lovely light energy.”
Back in the studio, Lorraine said: “She’s been really through it, hasn’t she. She really has. It’s so awful and it’s obviously knocked her for six.”
On the opposite sofa, Louise said: “I think, like a lot of people in the pandemic who lost loved ones, it was just so quickly. They went into hospital and didn’t come out again.
“We really felt for her on that day. My heart was breaking because she was so lost, wasn’t she?”
Liz appeared on the programme remotely to say she was “really grateful” for the work Paul and Louise had done on the hut.
She said: “The hut is amazing and it’s got a different feeling now. I feel as if Gordon’s been on this journey with me and he’s just back in the hut again. I feel as if we’re going to fill it with good memories.”
Lorraine airs weekdays at 9am on ITV
