Los Angeles park shooting leaves 2 people dead and 5 others injured

Two people were killed and four others injured after gunfire broke in a Los Angeles park Sunday afternoon, authorities said.

Details: In the latest of a series of shootings to hit the U.S. over the summer, four males and three females were taken to local hospitals after the incident "at or near a car show" at Peck Park, some 20 miles south of downtown L.A., the Los Angeles Fire Department said.

  • Officers responded to calls of "a shooting with multiple victims" at the park in the San Pedro neighborhood of L.A. about 3:50pm, per a Los Angeles Police Department statement, which stressed it was not an active shooter situation.
  • At least three of the patients were confirmed to have sustained gunshot injuries, the LAFD said.

What they're saying: LAPD Capt. Kelly Muniz told reporters that police believe the shooting erupted at a baseball field in the park as about 500 people gathered for the car show, according to CBS News.

  • Muniz said the incident arose from "a dispute between two parties," but "we don’t know how many shooters we have at this point," the Los Angeles Times reports.

The big picture: There have been multiple mass shootings since President Biden last month signed a gun safety bill that Congress swiftly passed in response to recent shooting massacres, notably one at a Uvalde, Texas, elementary school and another at a Buffalo, New York, supermarket.
