Russell Westbrook has backed by former NBA star Charles Barkley, with the pundit blaming the Los Angeles Lakers for scapegoating him for their recent downfall.
Westbrook joined the Lakers in 2021, and alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis, they looked like even more of a championship contender after winning the competition in 2020. But it's gone the opposite way, and the Lakers didn't even make the play-offs last season.
But despite many issuing a lot of the blame on Westbrook, Barkley thinks that the Lakers are at fault for affecting him personally. And he's called for the player and organisation to part ways and look for a fresh start.
The Lakers lost their opening game of the season on Tuesday night as NBA champions Golden State Warriors won 123-109 at Chase Center. It wasn't the worst performance by any means, but it's already caused concern after a woeful run in pre-season.
James netted 31 points on the night, with Davis not far behind on 27, and Westbrook contributed with 19 points during the defeat. But it wasn't enough, as the champions began their title defence in style.
During NBA on TNT's half-time show, Westbrook's impact was once again discussed, but Barkley produced a passionate rant supporting the 33-year-old. And he's requested that the Lakers trade him, as mentally he feels as though Westbrook is suffering.
Barkley said: "You know how I feel about Russell Westbrook. I admire him, I respect him. It's time for the Lakers to move him... They have taken all his joy out of life and basketball.
"It's not about the numbers, it's the look. This guy used to be so exuberant, play with energy and great emotion. I think the wear and tear mentally last year, starting this year, playing with Patrick Beverley.
"He's going to get the blame no matter what because the Lakers aren't a championship contender. They scapegoated him last year, I think he needs a fresh start, and I think the Lakers need a fresh start.
Westbrook spent 11 years with Oklahoma City Thunder after being drafted in 2008, but has found it tough since moving away from his first franchise. Westbrook has played for the Houston Rockets, Washington Wizards and now the Lakers since 2018, but hasn't been himself.
Once named as the MVP in 2017, it's been an unfortunate story since, and a lot of negativity continues to surround the Lakers. Barkley thinks another trade is needed, and it could be on the cards if things continue.
