Lorenzo Amoruso reckons Rangers need to start fighting for each other - or risk more Champions League humiliation against Napoli, Ajax and Liverpool.
The Italian marshalled some formidable Ibrox back-lines back in the day as he won three league titles under Dick Advocaat and Alex McLeish. He admits it's been tough to watch his old team toil in Europe since qualifying for the top UEFA competition, as they've shipped seven goals to no reply against Ajax and Napoli.
They've also conceded eight in seven Premiership games - four of which came against Celtic in a damaging defeat at Parkhead. And Amoruso, speaking in the Sunday Post , reckons that's partly down to players looking after "their own bit of the garden" rather than defending as a team. He said: "Defences are the foundations of football teams. I played in a Rangers defence that was very strong, we knew and trusted each other so were able to provide the defensive stability that helped the team succeed.
"Unfortunately the current side looks much less solid at the back. I do not think it is about the quality of the players, either, rather how they go about their job.
"My impression is that they are not helping each other out enough. Everyone seems to be thinking about their own little bit of the garden. This is a big problem. I also believe there is little help from the midfield in terms of the defensive side of the game.
"The first thing to say is that the players need to commit to helping each other more. They lost 3-0 to Napoli at Ibrox and the defeat could have easily been heavier. I say that because although they had to deal with sanctions from the referee, for me the decisions were correct.
"For sure, Napoli have great players. We see that not only in Europe but in their games against Italy's top clubs. But you will meet top performers in high-level football, and when you do, you have to be able to stop them hurting you.
"To do that takes not only teamwork, but concentration and focus from everyone. Not just for a few minutes, either, but from the first whistle to the last."
