Scientists have identified a new species of penguin for the first time in more than a century. The clue was not in how it looks. It was in its DNA.
The bird is the southeastern gentoo penguin, named Pygoscelis kerguelensis . It lives on the sub-Antarctic Kerguelen Island and, most likely, nearby Heard Island in the southern Indian Ocean.
