Londoners without gardens can book a free barbecue on the South Bank this summer

The weather might not be playing ball yet, but British summertime is officially here.

And for Londoners looking to dust off their barbecues in anticipation, but who don’t have enough outdoor space to use them, the city’s first free barbecue space will be opening on South Bank next month.

Open from June 1 to June 3, the free Sainsbury’s Book-a-BBQ Garden will give the opportunity to some of the 15 million Brits without ample garden space a chance to enjoy the delights of an outdoor grill.

Guests will be provided with a Sainsbury’s summer food hamper, a gas barbecue and tools, all without a price tag. The menu includes a host of summer products from Sainsbury’s new seasonal range.

Sainsbury’s has partnered with Weber to provide the barbecue.

The garden will be open from noon to 8pm daily, with 90 minutes per booking.

Among the options in the hamper will be the Taste the Difference Signature Beef Rib & Brisket Burgers, as well as plant-based alternatives such as the Taste the Difference Middle Eastern-Style Koftas, as well as mocktails.

Guests can pick between three mouth-watering bundles worth at least £50, with vegan and meat-lovers’ options, as well as dietary preferences accommodated.

The garden open days are set to appeal to the approximately third of Londoners who don’t have the space at home to host a barbecue.

With temperatures set to soar this season, the garden will give Brits the chance to spend quality time with friends or family, providing a safe and enjoyable way to bring the Great British barbecue back.

“Summer is a time for celebration and getting together with friends and family to enjoy delicious food,” said Claire Hughes, director of Product & Innovation at Sainsbury’s.

“But for those who don’t have access to outside space at home, that doesn’t mean they should miss out. That’s why we’ve launched the Sainsbury’s Book-a-BBQ Garden, keeping food at the heart of it, as we make it our mission to ensure even those without their own outdoor area can still enjoy the season’s smoky, BBQ flavours.”

However, train strikes are due to go ahead on these dates, so it’s worth planning your visit to the South VBank in advance.
