London Underground's Southwark station to partially close until 2025 to make way for building development

Southwark Station will close for some weekends until April 2025 - (Ross Lydall)

Southwark Station is due to close for nine weekends from the end of November to make way for a new building development above it.

From November 22, the busy Underground station that connects passengers to the Jubilee Line will close every Friday through Sunday as a 17-storey building is erected around it.

The closures will make way for Transport for London (TfL)’s ‘enhancements’ of the South London station, which are set to include office spaces, affordable homes, and student accommodation.

The new development will include some 429 self-contained student rooms, adding more living opportunities for young people studying in the heart of the capital.

Weekend closures at Southwark station will impact travel from Friday evening through the weekend, but normal services will resume on Monday morning, and regular station access is available on weekdays.

What’s more, it won’t impact consecutive weekends until early 2025, so it shouldn’t have too much of an impact on those using the Jubilee Line around the Christmas shopping period.

While work is underway over the weekends, trains won’t stop at Southwark, and travellers trying to access the station are being advised to get off at Waterloo – around 12 minutes away by foot.

Travellers could also get off at London Bridge, which is a 19-minute walk to Southwark.

It’s likely that Jubilee trains will make announcements reminding passengers that Southwark Station is closed during these times and to get off at the earlier stop.

Bus routes and e-bikes are also available across South London, which can help passengers get closer to their Southwark destinations in the interim.

The station will be closed on the following dates:
