Local eight year old brings four medals home to West Lothian after an amazing performance at the Dance World Cup in Spain

A young West Lothian dancer has scooped a medal haul from the Dance World Cup.

Sophia Duffie (8) of East Whitburn, impressed judges enough in the qualifying rounds to travel to San Sebastián in Spain to perform in four routines.

For her four routines, she was awarded four medals - two gold, one silver, and one bronze.

Sophia dances for the McKechnie School of Dance and Performing Arts in Grangemouth and was joined at the Dance World Cup with her fellow dancers, dance principal Nadine Judge, and mum Vicki.

Sophia who attends Clifton Hall School in Edinburgh, has been going to dance classes at the dance school near Falkirk since the age of three.

She competed against dancers from countries from across the world in a week of dancing in northern Spain.

The young dancer is involved in a few different forms of song and dance, including tap, ballet, jazz, voice jam, and musical theatre - while she qualified for the Dance World Cup through her mini-ballet group, her primary interest lies with musical theatre.

In addition to showing her dancing skills in Spain, Sophia also showed off her singing prowess - with several solo singing parts at the Dance World Cup for an audience of thousands.

Regularly competing in competitions all over Scotland she has seen much more success after her time spent performing in Spain.

In her most recent competition at Musselburgh, Sophia took home five medals for five performances.

Sophia’s mum, Vicki, said:”Sophia was asked by her dance teachers to audition for the Dance World Cup with the mini ballet group back in November last year.

“They got enough points to make it through - and a few months later we were in Spain!

“For Sophia to be only eight years old performing on a stage in a completely packed theatre is absolutely amazing - it was such a good experience for her, she has come back so much more confident in herself.

“She had a solo singing part in ‘When Children Rule the World’ on-stage which is her absolute favourite performance.

“I was nervous for her but she did so well - I’m chuffed to bits for her, her dance teachers are so supportive!

“Sophia’s still absolutely buzzing, the medals are up on the wall and we’re still watching the videos back now!

“Her mini-ballet routine was automatically accepted for next years Dance World Cup in Braga in Portugal, and she’s thinking about auditioning for other routines as well.”
