Liz Truss will be entitled to claim £115,000 per year from the taxpayer despite becoming the shortest-serving Prime Minister in British history.
Truss, who resigned on Thursday afternoon after just 44 days in office, will be able to claim through the Public Duties Cost Allowance (PDCA) which allows former leaders to claim money back towards the cost of maintaining their activities in public life.
Liz Truss becomes the sixth living former Prime Minister entitled to claim through the scheme, meaning taxpayers could be forking out more than £700,000 per year to former Prime Ministers.
