Liz Truss has been branded an “imbecile” and compared to the muppet character Beaker by the wife of a sacked Tory government Minister.
Felicity Cornelius-Mercer said the cabinet system “stinks” and “treats people appallingly” after her husband, Johnny Mercer, was removed as veterans affairs minister by the new Prime Minister.
Mercer had appeared angry about the sacking and issued an angry resignation letter, saying he was “disappointed” but accepted that the PM is “entitled to reward her supporters”.
But his wife went further with an outburst on Twitter calling Liz Truss an “imbecile” and posting a photo of Beaker, the hapless lab assistant in the famous puppet television show.
Cornelius-Mercer tweeted an account of her husband’s exit discussions: “He asked her ‘why would you do this, who is going to be better at this role than me, which of your mates gets the job, you promised a meritocracy?’
“PM – I can’t answer that Johnny.
“This system stinks & treats people appallingly. Best person I know sacked by an imbecile @trussliz.”
Beaker was previously the nickname given to Danny Alexander, the red-haired Scottish Liberal Democrat MP who was Chief Secretary to the Treasury in the Coalition government.
