With 265.2 million views worldwide in its first 91 days on Netflix, Squid Game season one is the streaming giant’s most popular non-English language show ever.
The Korean TV series received 14 Primetime Emmy nominations after its debut in 2021, winning six awards. These included its creator and director Hwang Dong-hyuk becoming the first Asian to win Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series.
The wait for a second season was eased by a reality show inspired by the games in 2023, but now fans can rejoice as details of a long-awaited sequel have emerged.

Will Squid Game season 2 feature any of the original cast?
Season one lead Lee Jung-jae will return as gambling-addicted father Seong Gi-hun. He’ll be joined by Lee Byung-hun, the black-masked Front Man of the games’ guards; Wi Ha-joon, a police officer who goes undercover to find his brother; and Gong Yoo, who entices the players into the game as The Salesman.
A host of new characters make up this season’s players, including popular Korean actor Im Si-wan.
What will Squid Game season 2 be about?
For those who may have missed the first season or need a refresher, the show follows a group of people who play a series of childhood games to receive a cash prize. The caveat? If you lose, you die.
*Spoiler alert*
Gi-hun wins the games in the first season but not without emotional scarring and anger. In the final episode, he plans to escape Korea to start a new life in the United States with his daughter and ex-wife. At the last moment, he overhears The Salesman attempting to recruit someone nearby and turns around.
Season 2 is set three years later and Gi-hun, having chosen not to go to the US, rejoins the games with the hope of putting an end to them. However, this time around, Netflix has said there are new rules: after every round, each player gets to vote to stay or leave.
