Liverpool urged to complete January transfer for midfielder and stop 'free' move to rivals

Liverpool have been told why they would be wise to sign Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans.

The Reds were tentatively linked with a move for Tielemans throughout the summer transfer window. Arsenal were another club who were credited with an interest in the player.

Tielemans’ current contract at Leicester is set to expire at the end of the season. It was reported on deadline day that the Foxes would have accepted a bid worth £25million for the Belgium international, but he ended up remaining at the King Power Stadium.

Liverpool waited until deadline day to bring in a new midfielder, although it was in the form of a season-long loan deal. Arthur Melo arrived from Juventus until the end of the campaign, with the Italian club claiming the Reds have the option to make the deal permanent.

Despite Tielemans being able to sign for a new club as a free agent next summer, former Liverpool defender Glen Johnson thinks a move in January would be wise for his old club. Johnson went on to explain why he reckons a new midfielder is necessary at Anfield.

"I'd definitely be looking to sign him. If it's safer to secure it now and pay a small fee, then I'd do that,” Johnson told Bettingodds.com .

“I wouldn't run the risk of allowing anyone else to have him for free. I think he's the sort of player that could fit into any team relatively straightforwardly.

"We know their [Liverpool] squad is quite light, and they're starting XI is hindered quite a lot when they have a couple of injuries.

“I definitely think they need a few more bodies in there."
