Liverpool picked up a huge win over Tottenham on Sunday thanks to two goals from Mohamed Salah.
The Reds went into half-time 2-0 up in north London after Salah smashed into the bottom corner from Darwin Nunez’s pass and chipped Hugo Lloris after Eric Dier’s horrific mistake.
Harry Kane got a goal back with a measured finish for Spurs, who twice hit the woodwork, but it wasn’t enough as they slipped to a 2-1 defeat and handed Jurgen Klopp’s struggling side their first away win in the Premier League this season and their fifth from 13 games in total.
Salah was the star of the show, but the game also sparked other talking points, with Trent Alexander-Arnold’s performance of particular interest ahead of Gareth Southgate naming his England squad on Thursday.
Here Mirror Football brings you the latest Liverpool headlines following their victory over Tottenham.
Alexander-Arnold defended
Alexander-Arnold was involved in a lot of the action on Sunday. He was fortunate to get away with a shoulder barge on Ryan Sessegnon in the penalty area and saw Ivan Perisic hit the woodwork twice.
Gary Neville says Southgate won’t trust him for the World Cup, but Klopp defended his player’s performance post-match.
Asked by Sky Sports whether Alexander-Arnold had a mixed bag, he replied: “For sure. His diagonals are from a different planet, I would say. That’s unbelievable and we obviously could have done with these balls even more than we did.
“It’s really difficult with four at the back to defend in these games. It’s only possible with support because first half it was Sessegnon then Perisic – he can cross with the left foot like he can with the right foot and he’s a threat in the air as well. So that’s a lot to consider as a defender.”
Conte touchline incident explained
There was one particularly heated moment on the touchline during the Tottenham match, with Antonio Conte appearing furious as his side chased the game.
Conte ran over to the Liverpool technical area and slapped a ball out of the hands of Reds assistant Pep Lijnders as he tried to hurry the match up.
Klopp’s No2 looked baffled as to what was happening, while Klopp himself had his back turned initially.
Thankfully, tempers did not flare any more from then on, with Klopp instigating a round of hugging. Conte played down the significance of the tiff in his post-match interview too.
Thiago heaps praise on Salah
Salah was the match-winner in north London and his teammate Thiago Alcantara is in no doubts about just how good he is.
The Egyptian now has 14 goals and five assists in 20 appearances for Liverpool this season and looks to have rediscovered his best form of late, with five goals and one assist in his past four games.
"For sure, he is one of the top forwards or wingers I have played with in my career,” Thiago told the Premier League post-match when asked about Salah.
“It is the consistency he has, not just on the pitch but outside of it. His work ethic, how he wants to help the team, how he wants to help himself."
