Liverpool news: Klopp claims Reds "should've" beaten Man Utd as Salah pinpoints challengers

Liverpool remain winless this season after their defeat at Manchester United on Monday night.

The Reds have now picked up just two points from a possible nine as their form is called into question. The reverse leaves them seven points off the pace as Jurgen Klopp is forced to deal with injuries to several key stars including the likes of Thiago and Joel Matip.

Liverpool's performance levels have been cited as an issue amid a potential hangover from last season, where the Reds fell narrowly short in the league and in Europe. These are the latest news lines coming out of Anfield.

Reds "should've" beaten Man Utd

Klopp made the surprise claim that his Liverpool side should have beaten United at Old Trafford despite ending up on the wrong side of a 2-1 scoreline.

Liverpool are still searching for their first win of the new Premier League season after defeat at Old Trafford in a game that they rarely looked like getting anything out of.

"It's obvious we are in a tricky situation, we get through the week with 14 players available and we have to make sure none of them get injured now," the Reds boss explained. "There are no real options left anymore, even with our situation. We should have won this game, I know that sounds ridiculous, but that is how I see it – we lost it and now we go from here.

Salah backs Arsenal as challengers

Arsenal are true contenders for the Premier League this season, according to Liverpool star Mohamed Salah.

The Gunners have finished outside the top four for the past six seasons and haven’t won the Premier League since the famous Invincibles campaign of 2003/04. But Salah named them among Liverpool’s competitors for the trophy this campaign.

“City, Chelsea, Arsenal are doing good,” Salah told Sky Sports when asked who would be in the mix. “Of course, I didn’t mention Liverpool because I always put us there. We want to win the Premier League. These three, with us, I think are going to be the competition.”

Fabinho defends Fred after Casemiro buy

Liverpool star Fabinho has launched an impassioned defence of United midfielder Fred and has insisted the club should not replace him with new signing Casemiro.

“I played with him in Real Madrid ’s second team and with the national team,” he said on the new arrival at Old Trafford. “‘He is a friend, we always have conversations and he is a good guy. Of course, he will be a good signing. Casemiro is a smart guy, he is a good player, he is strong, he is good in the air, so it will not be hard for him to adapt to the Premier League.”

Fabinho though has backed Fred, who he struggles to understand the criticism of. "Sometimes I don’t really understand the criticisms with Fred because he is a regular player, he always plays good football," the Liverpool midfielder said. "In general Manchester United have not been successful in the last seasons so you try to find a solution or you try to put the fault on some of the players and sometimes I think Fred is that player."
