Liverpool linked with extraordinary €200m transfer bid for Kylian Mbappe

Liverpool have reportedly made an extraordinary €200m bid for Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappe.

Mbappe, who joined PSG in 2017 initially on loan from Monaco before a £165.7m transfer, has scored 212 goals in 260 games for the club. He also helped France reach the World Cup final last year.

However, the forward informed PSG in a letter sent last month that he would not trigger the additional year’s extension to his contract, meaning he can leave for nothing in the summer of 2024. Since then, the 24-year-old has been linked with a host of clubs across Europe.

A statement released by the player’s representatives read: "After maintaining publicly in recent weeks that he would be a PSG player next season, Kylian Mbappe has not asked to leave this summer and has just confirmed to the club that he would not be activating the extra year.

"The management of the club in charge of the extension [was informed] as of July 15, 2022, of the decision [not to continue beyond 2024]. The statement then said: "The letter was only to confirm what had already been clarified orally beforehand."

And now Mbappe, who has been linked with Liverpool in the past and even held talks with the Anfield club before deciding to extend his stay in Paris, is, according to journalist Edu Aguirre, the subject of a €200m offer from the Reds.

"What has occurred in the last few hours in the offices of PSG is that an offer from Liverpool has arrived," Aguirre said via Sport Witness.

"Liverpool have entered the scene. Liverpool have made a €200m offer for Mbappe. The offer from Liverpool that has arrived in the last few hours in the offices of PSG is of €200m. Al-Khelaifi has put Mbappe up for sale."

Speaking at the unveiling of Luis Enrique on Wednesday afternoon, club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi said Mbappe must sign a new contract if he wants to stay at Princes Park.

He said: "Our position is very clear. If Kylian Mbappe wants to stay - we want him to stay - he needs to sign a new contract. We cannot let the best player in the world right now leave for free. That is impossible."

Before he added: "This is a French club, and, as he has said, he is not planning to leave for free. If somebody has changed his mind, it is not our fault."
