UEFA have confirmed who will be the referee for Liverpool’s clash against Villarreal this week.
The Reds take on the La Liga outfit in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final. The first leg takes place at Anfield on Wednesday night, before Liverpool travel to Spain for the second leg next week.
Jurgen Klopp’s side go into the game on the back of a hard-fought victory over Everton in the Premier League. For Villarreal, they will have had more than a week since their last match, having not played since their 2-0 win over Valencia last Tuesday.

It has been confirmed by UEFA that Szymon Marciniak will be the referee for Wednesday’s clash between Liverpool and Villarreal. The Polish official will be assisted by Pawel Sokolnicki and Tomasz Listkiewicz. On VAR duty it will be Tomasz Kwiatkowski and Bartosz Frankowski.
Liverpool fans may remember Marciniak taking charge of two Reds matches already this season, with each of them ending in victories. Marciniak oversaw the 3-2 win over AC Milan in the group stage at Anfield in September, as well as the 2-0 away victory against Inter Milan in the last-16 first leg at the San Siro.
During that contest against AC Milan, Marciniak awarded a penalty in the early moments for a handball by Ismael Bennacer. The resulting spot-kick was then missed by Mohamed Salah.
However, before then Marciniak had taken charge of two Liverpool defeats. He was the referee for the Reds’ 1-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in February 2020, as well as the 2-1 away loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the group stage in November 2018.
