Liverpool falls silent on 33rd anniversary of Hillsborough disaster to remember the 97

Liverpool fell silent today to mark the 33rd anniversary of Hillsborough and to honour the 97 people unlawfully killed in the disaster.

The bells at Liverpool Town Hall tolled 97 times at 3.06pm while flags were flown at half mast in tribute, as Lord Mayor Cllr Mary Rasmussen led the silence in Exchange Flags. Emotional tributes were paid across Merseyside in respect to the victims and their families.

Liverpool FC legend Sir Kenny Dalglish, who was the Reds manager on the day of the tragedy in 1989, was one of many to lay a floral wreath at the Anfield Hillsborough memorial. He was joined by current manager Jurgen Klopp and captain Jordan Henderson.

Players also observed a minute's silence beside the Hillsborough memorial at the AXA Training Centre earlier this afternoon. On Twitter, the club said: "Our thoughts, as always, are with all those affected by the tragedy at Hillsborough 33 years ago today and the 97 fans who will never be forgotten. You'll Never Walk Alone."

Sir Kenny Dalglish also tweeted his own tribute and said: "Remembering the 97 and all those affected by the Hillsborough disaster. You are in our thoughts today and always. YNWA."

The Hillsborough Justice Campaign held a service at the Hillsborough monument on Old Haymarket in Liverpool city centre.

Everton Football Club also today updated their Hillsborough memorial to include the name of the 97th victim Andrew Devine.

The club tweeted: "Thirty-three years ago today, a devastating tragedy occurred during Liverpool's FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest at Hillsborough stadium in Sheffield. We were - and remain - a city united in its grief."
